What is the Express Entry System?
An Exciting Opportunity for Skilled Immigrants
What is the Express Entry System?
The Express Entry system is Canada’s fastest and most famous immigration pathway that can help you migrate to Canada within a period of 6-12 months. It is one of the best immigration pathways that facilitate permanent residency and work permits for the candidates in the pool.
The express entry stream is a point-based system that evaluates the immigrant applicants according to their express entry points allocated for various factors such as work experience, language proficiency, demand skills, age, educational qualifications, and others. The higher the scores, the higher are your chances of getting the “Invitation to Apply”.
The Express Entry pool selects candidates who meet the eligibility of at least ONE of three federal economic immigration programs:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)-This program is for skilled workers with at least 1 year of experience.
- Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)- The candidate should have at least one year of experience in a trade job like electrician, industrial butcher, etc for being eligible for this program.
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC)- This program is for skilled workers with at least one year of experience in Canada. The applicant should have previously worked in Canada.
What are the eligibility criteria for the Express Entry stream?
- First of all, the applicant must be eligible under one of the economic immigration programs.
- They need to score at least 67 out of 100 points, based on six factors. (Eligible candidates in the pool are then ranked against each other based on various factors.
- Must have at least 1 year of full-time working experience in a skilled sector.
- The candidate should score a minimum of 7 in either English or French in IELTS.
- The applicant must have an educational qualification equivalent to the Canadian educational system.
What is the Express Entry Procedure?
- Step 1: Out of the three federal immigration programs, check your eligibility. If you are eligible under any of the three programs, apply for the Express Entry pool through that program.
- Step 2: Before applying, make sure that you have all the required documents for the Express Entry procedure.
- Step 3: Now, create your express entry profile online and show your interest in migrating to Canada by providing the required information on your age, work experience, educational qualifications, etc.
Upon submission of your profile, your profile would be evaluated and you will receive a score in the pool using the CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System).
The CRS sums up factors like skills, work experience, language ability, education, and other factors.
- Step 4: The top-ranking candidates from the Express Entry pool are invited to apply for permanent residence. You can also be invited by a province for a PNP. After the invitation is issued, you will have 90 days to submit your application for PR.

Express Entry aligned PNP System:
The Express Entry aligned PNP is another pathway that allows the provincial governments to search the federal government’s Express Entry pool of candidates for skilled workers to fulfill their regional labor market needs and issue work permits or PRs.
If you get nominated by this program, you would receive an additional 600 points to your CRS score, which would eventually increase your chances of getting invited for PR.
