Common-law Sponsorships
Canadian Immigration considers common-law relationships the same as conventional marriages. To be eligible under this category, applicants must prove that they have lived together for a year or longer in a marriage-like relationship as a couple.
Immigration officers may expect you to show the following evidence:
- Relationship Information and Sponsorship Evaluation questionnaire
- Birth certificates or adoption records for any children you and your common-law partner have together
- Photos of you and your common-law partner that demonstrate that you are in a conjugal relationship
- Proof that you have lived together for at least one year
And at least two of the following documents:
- Documents indicating that the applicants are recognized as each other’s common-law partner, like employment or insurance benefits
- Evidence of financial support or shared expenses between the applicant and partner
- Proof that the relationship is recognized by family and friends (letters, emails, social media)
If you can’t provide all of the required documents or as asked by the visa officers, try collecting documents attesting to your common-law status. The final decision of your application is at the sole discretion of the visa officer, but the more documents you can provide the better.
Conjugal Relationships
Applicants in a conjugal relationship can show the following documents as evidence:
- Shared residence
- Economic support, including joint financial arrangements, shared bank accounts, etc.
- Evidence proving that the two of you are in a relationship as recognized by your friends and family
For common-law and conjugal relationships, there is no legal documentation or a specific point to solidify your commitment to one another. Instead, immigration officers expect evidence showcasing significant interpersonal and emotional ties demonstrating that you are in a serious, committed relationship and intend to remain in that relationship long-term.
What is the processing time for Canada Spouse Visa?
Permanent residents and Canadian citizen can sponsor their spouse or common-law partners if they meet the following listed criteria:
- At least 18 years old
- Live in Canada, or planning to return to Canada once your spouse or partner becomes a permanent resident of Canada
- Are able and willing to provide for the basic financial needs of your spouse or partner for three years
Applicants who are married and plan to sponsor their husband or wife may have to show the following evidence to the immigration officers:
- Relationship Information and Sponsorship Evaluation questionnaire
- Marriage certificate
- Wedding invitations and photos
- Birth certificates or adoption records for any children you and your spouse have together
- Proof of registration of marriage with a government authority
And at least two of the following documents:
- Proof that you and your spouse own property together
- Shared bank accounts
- Utility bills with both of your names
- Copies of government-issued IDs
- Car insurance
- Pay stubs or tax forms that show that you live at the same address

Canadian permanent residents or citizens planning to sponsor their spouse and dependent children will have to pay an additional $150 payment for each child included in the application.

How Many Funds Do You Need To Sponsor Your Spouse To Canada?
Unlike other Canadian sponsorships, applicants do not have to show proof of funds or a minimum income to sponsor a spouse. However, while sponsoring a family member to Canada, an undertaking must be signed promising financial support for the basic needs of the individual. The length of the undertaking is decided by the sponsorship category.
