Every year, Canada warmly receives millions of temporary visitors. If you’re not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or from a visa-exempt country, and you wish to temporarily experience Canada as a tourist, temporary worker, or international student, you’ll need to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV).
This visa is issued by a Canadian Immigration Visa Office, confirming that you fulfil the necessary criteria for entering Canada as a visitor. It’s important to note, though, that holding a TRV doesn’t automatically ensure entry or temporary resident status in Canada.
The Multiple-Entry Visa stands out for its flexibility, allowing the holder to enter Canada from any country as frequently as necessary throughout its validity period. Typically issued with extended validity, often up to 10 years or one month before the expiry date on the travel document, this TRV serves to facilitate seamless entry for legitimate travelers.
In contrast, a Single-Entry Visa permits entry to Canada on one occasion only. Understanding the distinctions between these visa categories is paramount in aligning your travel plans with the appropriate visa type that best suits your needs.
On the flip side, a Single-Entry Visa becomes pertinent when an applicant is partaking in a singular special event in Canada with a brief duration. Given that the norm is the issuance of Multiple-Entry Visas if a Single-Entry Visa is granted, the immigration officer must provide a clear rationale behind the decision.
Typically, international students are required to apply for a Canada Study Visa to enroll in an educational program. However, if your program spans less than six months, a study permit is not obligatory. For programs extending beyond six months, application to a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada is essential. Upon acceptance, the subsequent step involves applying for a study permit to seamlessly continue your academic pursuits.
In general, foreign nationals seeking employment in Canada need a valid work permit. If you currently possess valid temporary resident status, you can initiate the process of obtaining a work permit. During the waiting period for a decision on your application, it is customary to extend your stay in Canada, essentially remaining in the country under “maintained status” until a decision is reached.
The concept of dual intent refers to a foreign national who, while applying for or contemplating a Canada PR visa, also intends to enter the country temporarily as a visitor, student, or worker. While maintaining dual intent is permissible, it’s crucial to note that the potential approval for permanent residence does not exempt you from fulfilling the requirements of a temporary resident. This includes the essential obligation to depart Canada when your authorized stay concludes.
