Immigrate to Canada as a Truck Driver

Due to a pandemic of layoffs and an aging labor force, Canada is currently experiencing a severe labor shortage of truck drivers.
In addition to adding 16 new jobs that are now eligible for Express Entry, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) last week switched from the NOC 2016 system to the NOC 2021 system. One of them is truck driving because there is a severe labor shortage in the industry.

Industry of Truck Driving in Canada

The COVID-19 epidemic, high retirement rates, and other issues have led to layoffs, and the truck driving sector is currently experiencing a severe lack of trained people. In Canada, there were over 18,000 open positions for truck drivers in the second quarter of 2021, according to research.
The truck driving sector is a vital link in Canada’s supply chain and is crucial to sustaining the nation’s economy, particularly during times of disruption and labor constraints.
The report also showed how more than $850 billion in goods are transported to local and international markets by Canada’s trucking and logistics sector. It was estimated that the lack of truck drivers in Canada was affecting the sector with $450 million in lost production even before the global epidemic.

How does Express Entry get affected by the NOC 2021?

Previously, in order to fill out an Express Entry form for PR in Canada, applicants had to have work experience that matched NOC skill categories 0, A, or B, which was aligned with the Canada NOC list 2016.
After this modification takes effect on November 16, Canada will use the new  Education, Training, Experience, and Responsibilities (TEER) system to determine a candidate’s suitability for professional experience.
Based on the new NOC 20121 system, the NOC code for truck drivers is 73300.
