First Express Entry Draw - STEM Category of 2024

In another move to bolster Canada’s skilled workforce, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has once again extended invitations to potential immigrants through the Express Entry system. The draw, conducted on April 11th, targeted candidates specializing in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) occupations.
A total of 4,500 invitations to apply (ITAs) were issued in this category-based selection draw. To qualify, candidates needed to meet a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 491.

Details of the draw: April 11, 2024

If more than one candidate has the lowest score, the cut-off is based on the date and time they submitted their Express Entry profiles.
This marks the first draw for STEM occupation candidates in the current year, showcasing Canada’s continued focus on attracting skilled professionals in vital fields. The previous day’s draw, on April 10th, saw IRCC extending invitations to 1,280 candidates, with a minimum CRS score requirement of 549—the highest recorded minimum CRS score for any draw in 2024.
Comparing draw scores over recent months, the trend indicates a gradual decrease. The initial general draw of the year, on January 10th, necessitated a minimum CRS score of 546 for consideration. Subsequent draws have seen a downward trend, with the most recent general draw on March 25th inviting 1,980 candidates with a CRS score of 524.

What is Express Entry’s Category-Based Selection?

The category-based selection draws, introduced in May 2023, serve as a method for IRCC to effectively target Express Entry candidates possessing sought-after skills or human capital attributes.
Six categories were introduced by the department in 2023, and it was confirmed earlier this year that these same categories will persist throughout 2024.

    They include:

To be eligible for consideration in category-based selection draws, candidates must already have an application in the Express Entry pool.

More about Canada’s Express Entry Program

It’s noteworthy that general draws encompass candidates from all three Express Entry-managed programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). Unlike category-based selection draws like the recent one for STEM occupations, general draws primarily consider candidates based on their CRS score, making it a crucial determinant in receiving an ITA.
The consistent issuance of ITAs underlines Canada’s commitment to attracting skilled professionals across various sectors, aligning with its broader immigration goals and economic growth strategies. As Canada continues to navigate the global landscape, initiatives like these aim to reinforce its position as a preferred destination for skilled workers seeking new opportunities and a vibrant, inclusive society.
