Professional and Skilled Workers in Canada

The great majority of immigrants to Canada enter the country through policies that encourage economic immigration. According to Canada’s immigration plans for the years 2023 to 2025, the nation has the target to welcome close to 500,000 new economic immigrants. This implies that there are numerous opportunities for non-Canadians with the necessary skills to fill labor shortages in the country’s economy.
Programs of immigration with the intention of enhancing the Canadian economy are referred to as economic immigration. Most economic immigration initiatives focus on luring talented workers to Canada. In Canada, skilled professionals can fill labour market gaps and establish long-lasting careers that support the country’s economy. Successful applicants get permanent residence status in Canada under skilled worker immigration programs, which are permanent resident programs.

      Express Entry

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) manages applications for three significant federal skilled worker immigration programs using the Express Entry system.
Additionally, many provinces run Express Entry-aligned Provincial Nomination Programs (PNPs) streams. Applicants who qualify for one of the Express Entry-managed programs are required to register with the Express Entry pool.
Regardless of the program for which they are qualified, the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is then used to award a score to each Express Entry candidate based on their profile. This rating is determined by a number of factors, including age, education, language ability, employment history, and ties to Canada. In recurring Express Entry drawings, invitations to apply for permanent residence are given to the top-scoring applicants. The processing time for Express Entry is 6 months.

      Federal Skilled Worker

All applicants for the Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program must have a minimum of one year of experience in a skilled job. For foreign nationals residing outside of Canada, however, this program may be the best immigration choice since it does not require a connection to Canada. Please be aware that the program has stringent eligibility requirements including age, level of education, work experience, and language proficiency.

      Federal Skilled Trades

The Federal Skilled Trades (FST) program requires applicants to have at least two years of professional experience in a skilled craft. The last five years must have passed since this experience was attained. Also, qualified candidates must possess a full-time job offer for a position lasting at least a year or an educational certificate in a relative trade job, issued by the Canadian province.

      Canadian Experience Class

A certain amount of Canadian experience is required for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), a program for economic immigration. Applicants must have at least 12 months of recent, full-time, skilled work experience that was completed in Canada. For foreign nationals without this Canadian experience, this program is not an option.

Provincial Nominee Programs for Skilled Workers

The provinces and territories of Canada run special immigration policies tailored to their particular economic and demographic requirements. Programs for provincial nominees are known as PNPs. There are many options available for skilled employees because many of these programs are aimed at filling labor shortfalls in the provinces and territories.

      Quebec Skilled Worker Immigration

Particularly when contrasted with the other provinces and territories, the province of Quebec preserves a large amount of autonomy and authority over its immigration rules and procedures. Because of this, Quebec runs independent immigration programs that are not part of the federal Express Entry program.

There are two steps involved in submitting an application for permanent residence through the province of Quebec. To obtain a Certificat de Selection du Québec  (CSQ), one must first apply to the Quebec government. The federal immigration authorities of Canada will accept paper applications for permanent residence from applicants who have CSQs. Québec runs two significant permanent residency programs for professionals:

      Quebec Experience Program

Skilled workers must reside in Quebec and have completed 12 months of full-time, skilled work experience there within the past two years in order to be eligible for the Québec Experience Program. The program has higher eligibility standards but a quicker processing period than Quebec Skilled Worker. Candidates must have advanced intermediate oral French proficiency to be considered for this program.

      Quebec Skilled Worker

For competent individuals who reside outside of Quebec, the Quebec Skilled Worker Program may be an alternative because it is not necessarily connected to Quebec. The QSW program uses a points system to evaluate applicants and determine who is eligible for the program. Candidates that are interested must use the Arrima Portal to submit an electronic EOI.

      Work Permits

The pursuit of a temporary work visa can be of interest to skilled workers who wish to work in Canada but are ineligible for an existing immigration scheme. The candidate’s eligibility for immigration programs for permanent residency may be improved by the job experience obtained while on a temporary work visa. Candidates typically need an offer of employment from a Canadian employer in order to get a work permit.
